Digitization Volunteers: The International Amateur Scanning League

Public domain supporter Carl Malamud has launched a new volunteer effort to promote the digitization of U.S. government information. Malamud announced the club, the International Amateur Scanning League (IASL), in a 10 February 2010 O’Reilly Radar post. The first meeting was held in Washington, DC the following day with guest speaker David Ferriero, the National Archivist of the United States.

The IASL is tackling Malamud’s FedFlix project, the digitization and web storage of government-produced videos. The National Archives is allowing the IASL to install an extra DVD duplicator
for use of Scanning League members, who will copy the videos kept at the National Archives central facility in Maryland and send them to Malamud’s organization, Public.Resource.Org, for distribution to the
Internet Archive, YouTube, and Public Domain Stock Footage Library.

You can keep up to date with the project through the IASL Google Group. The Internet Archive has a recording of the first meeting.
